Improving the quality and use of surveillance data to better respond to public health threats and emergencies.
We prioritize the use of data for informed decision-making, training public health workers
Our program emphasizes practical, field-based training,
Aligned with the CDC’s global standards, our training programs are designed to expertise.
Our curriculum covers essential competency domainsensuring well-rounded expertise for every participant.
The Field Epidemiology Training Program was introduced in Sierra Leone in June 2016 with the aim of strengthening the country’s capacity by training public health workers who serve in the Ministry of Health (MoH) and other ministries and agencies to effectively respond to a potential outbreak or public health emergency. In September 2017, the Ministry of Health launched the 11-month FETP Intermediate with the aim of further strengthening the public health surveillance system and promoting the use of data for decision-making.
The duration of FETP-Frontline training is about 12 weeks (3 months), of which 3 weeks are for three classroom workshops, each lasting about a week, and 9 weeks for fieldwork at the participants’ workplace.
The centerpiece of the FETP-Intermediate program is a survey of a priority health topic planned and conducted by the participants as a group.
Is to improve the Ministry epidemiological capacity to identify, investigate, respond to, and communicate about public health priority concerns.
We provide rigorous training to public health workers, equipping them with the skills needed to detect, investigate, control, and prevent public health threats effectively.
Our programs strengthen public health surveillance systems, ensuring timely and accurate data collection, analysis, and reporting to monitor and respond to health issues.”
We lead and support field investigations during outbreaks, applying epidemiological methods to identify causes, track spread, and implement control measures.
We foster a culture of data-driven decision-making, encouraging the use of surveillance and investigation data to inform public health policies and actions.
The standard curriculum for FETP-Intermediate focuses on four competency domains — public health surveillance, field investigation, epidemiologic methods, and scientific communication. The learning outcomes for each domain are as follows:
